(1892-1954)
Turtle was born in Birmingham, England and plagued by poor health, his brother suggested in 1922, that he join relatives in Chicago, Illinois. There, he worked as an accountant and pursued the study of fine art. Affected adversely by both his health and the financial crash, he was supported in his artistic efforts by the Palette and Chisel Club. As did so many Midwest and East coast artists, he discovered the mild climate and thriving art colony in New Orleans. He painted French Quarter compositions, landscapes and Gulf Coast scenes. He exhibited annually at the Chicago Galleries Association, receiving numerous awards and public acclaim; in New Orleans, he exhibited at the well known patron of the arts and bookseller, Joseph S.W. Harmanson’s Royal Street Bookstore and at the Delgado Museum.
