Caroline Wogan Durieux

(1896-1989)

She entered Newcomb College in 1912, training under Ellsworth Woodward. After graduation she continued her studies at the Pennsylvania Academy and returned to teach at Newcomb from 1919-20, and then later in 1937-1944, at which time she completed her M.F.A at Louisiana State University. She also lived in Cuba, then Mexico, where she was acquainted with the great artists of the 20’s and 30’s. Durieux had a wry and caustic sense of humor, lampooning society’s customs and foibles in New Orleans. As she said, “I could not speak out against, but I could draw their pretensions.” These she illustrated in drawings and lithographs, developing color electron printing.
