Ella Miriam Wood

(1888-1976)

Ella Miriam Wood studied at the Newcomb Art School, New Orleans, under Ellsworth and William Woodward. She entered the Normal Art program of Newcomb Art School in 1905, completing her course study in 1908, when she was awarded a Diploma in Art. She was listed as a post-graduate student in 1910-1911 and as an Instructor in Watercolor for 1912-1913.

Miss Wood’s concentration was in the field of fine arts, especially in oil painting, as distinguished from the other fields then of interest at Newcomb. She excelled in portraiture, which was experiencing a renaissance in New Orleans at the time.

During the late Depression, Mrs. Charles (Ernestine) McLellan, who was a cousin residing in New Orleans, sponsored art lessons in her State Street home with Ella Miriam Wood as the instructor. In her later years, Ella Miriam Wood lived in New Orleans at Stanton Manor, a retirement home, with her sister Papoose. Later, when her sister became ill, both moved to St. Anna’s Residence.
