(1916-)
In recent years, before Hurricane Katrina, Fruge was an institution among the artists showing their work on Jackson Square in New Orleans. He was born on Bayou LaFourche, Louisiana; and he is self-trained. He shows a rare fluidity of execution in both watercolor and the less frequent medium of oil. His Louisiana landscapes favor bayou scenes close to the impressionist style of Knute Heldner and his wife Colette. He is best-known for his quick watercolor sketches of the French Quarter, where he operated Fruge’s Academy of Art from 1949-1952. Since then Fruge has traveled and exhibited principally in Europe and Mexico with frequent periodic sojourns in New Orleans.
