Sarah “Sadie” Agnes Estelle Irvine

(1887-1970)

Probably the best known of Newcomb’s Pottery Decorators, being at the School from 1902-1952. Her skill was manifest as well in embroidery, watercolor, drawing and design. With Henrietta Bailey, she experimented with block printing, a medium which became popular in the 1930’s, not only for fine art but in application on textiles.. She progressed from student to instructor, beloved by so many at the College; and in 1942, she rose to Head of the Ceramics Department. She said that she had initiated the favorite pottery subject c. 1915, – that of the Moon and Moss, – a scenic design which featured the stalwart Live Oak draped in Spanish moss beneath a moonlit sky. This subject, and variations thereof, remained popular through the 1930’s. After retiring from Newcomb, she taught at the Academy of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic girl’s school in uptown New Orleans.
