(1903-1965)
Walter was one of three artistically talented sons born to Annette McConnell Anderson, a Newcomb College Art School graduate. He grew up in New Orleans and trained at leading Northeastern design schools. He studied art in France before settling on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. At his brother Peter’s Shearwater Pottery (1927), he decorated the green ware, experimenting with traditional design elements. He became a perceptive observer of nature, inspired by the native tropical flora and fauna. He documented them in rapid, deft sketches and brilliant watercolors. Suffering from schizophrenia, he withdrew to Horn Island, where he recorded the life forms with his unique personal vision.
